Here’s the truth — life is short, and the “perfect time” to take your family on Safari does not exist. There’s always going to be a busy work season, a sports tournament, school commitments, or just LIFE getting in the way. But here’s what I know after helping families plan their dream Safari trips, the families who BOOK IT never regret it. The ones who keep waiting? They always wish they’d done it sooner.

A Safari with your kids isn’t just a vacation. It’s a CORE MEMORY. The kind they’ll talk about for the rest of their lives. The kind that becomes part of your family’s story forever.

And YES, you CAN bring your kids of any age on Safari, you just need to know the right location and place to go based on your child’s age! I get asked this question ALL the time, and I’m SO excited to break it all down for you! 

As a travel advisor who specializes in African Safaris (and someone who’s been to South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, and beyond!) I’ve seen families do this incredibly well, and I’m going to share all my insider tips so you can plan the family Safari of your dreams.

As well as my fiancé who is a safari guide with 20+ years experience in the African bush, day in and day out, hundreds of thousands of game drives, he knows what works with all ranges of kids and families and what doesn’t work. 

The biggest myth I hear is “we need to wait until they’re older.” & I understand peoples thought process there, however, no you don’t! From babies in family suites with in-suite nannies, to teens earning their Junior Ranger certification on foot, there is a Safari version for every age. You just have to know what to look for! 

AGE-BY-AGE SAFARI GUIDE

Babies & Toddlers (0-2/3)

Yes, you absolutely CAN take your baby on Safari! At this age, the trip is honestly more for you than them (they won’t remember it, but YOU will!). The key is picking a lodge that’s set up for little ones. Many offer incredible babysitting services, so USE THEM to your full advantage! Whether that’s when you’re on game drive, at the spa, taking a nap, or just a break, they are there for you! It is one of the best places to go on vacation as a family & you’ll actually be able to enjoy it outside of just being mom & dad. 

What to look for:

• Lodges with in-suite babysitting or dedicated nannies
• Family suites with separate sleeping areas
• Cots, baby monitors,etc 
• Malaria-free reserves (this is HUGE for peace of mind with under 5s, Madikwe Game Reserve is my personal fav!) 

Heads up: most lodges won’t allow kids under 6 on the standard shared game drives. That’s where a private vehicle comes in (keep reading, it’s the ultimate Safari hack for families!).

Little Explorers (4-6)

This is where things get REALLY fun! This is the age where Bumble Safaris come into play, and oh my gosh, they are honestly the cutest thing ever. Attention spans are short, but curiosity is HUGE.

What works:

• Bumble Safaris (full breakdown below — keep scrolling!)
• Short 1-2 hour kid-focused game drives
• LOTS of pool time between drives
• Hands-on activities,plaster-casting animal tracks, dung beetle hunts, learning how to spot tracks
• Early kids’ dinners (most lodges will totally accommodate)

Junior Rangers (7-11)

THE SWEET SPOT! Kids this age can do full game drives, are completely obsessed with everything they see, and most lodges have INCREDIBLE Junior Ranger programs for this age. Madikwe Safari Lodge, Tswalu, Phinda, Thornybush, they all have programs designed to make your kids feel like real-life rangers!

What they’ll love:

• Junior Ranger programs (kids often get a backpack, journal, and a certificate at the end!)
• Bow & arrow making, archery, tracking on foot
• Bush cooking & fire making
• Star gazing & learning the sounds of the bush at night
• Wildlife checklists (these literally don’t get put down!)

Teens (12+)

The FULL Safari experience is on the table! Walking safaris (lodge & location dependent), sleep-outs under the stars, longer drives. This is where Safari becomes absolutely transformative, kids this age GET it in a totally different way.

What to plan:

• Photography-focused trips (give them a real camera and watch them go!)
• Conservation experiences
• Mokoro trips in Botswana, canoeing the Zambezi, horseback safaris

WHAT IS A BUMBLE SAFARI?!

OKAY this is one of my FAVORITE things to tell parents about because it’s so underrated! A Bumble Safari (also called a “Jungle Drive” at some lodges) is a short, age-appropriate game drive made specifically for kids roughly 5 and under, aka the ages most lodges won’t allow on the regular Big Five game drives.

Here’s why I love them, instead of charging across the reserve hunting for lions, a Bumble does the OPPOSITE. The guide intentionally avoids dangerous game and focuses on what kids ACTUALLY find fascinating at that age:

• Dung beetles rolling their cargo (lol go look it up) 
• Toothbrush plants (and yes, kids get to try them!)
• Animal tracks in the sand, whose foot? which way did they go?
• Butterflies, chameleons, birds
• Plains game like giraffe, zebra, impala 

The drives are short (usually around an hour), the info is pitched right at the kids’ age, and the experience is super tactile, touching bark, feeling tracks, collecting seed pods. It’s literally the bush in miniature, and kids absolutely LOVE it.

LET’S TALK LODGE PRICING FOR KIDS

This is the part nobody really tells you about — and honestly, kids on Safari can be SO much more affordable than you’d think! Here’s the general lay of the land (but heads up: every lodge is different, so ALWAYS ask!).

✨ Under a certain age = FREE

Most lodges have an age where kids stay completely free. This is usually under 4, sometimes under 6 depending on the lodge. INCREDIBLE if you’re traveling with little ones!

✨ Kids’ Rate (usually 50% of adult rate)

This typically kicks in around age 4-6 and runs up to about 11. So if the adult rate is $1,000/night, the child rate would be around $500/night.

✨ Full Adult Rate (usually 12+)

Once kids hit 12, they’re typically charged the full adult rate. So if you’re traveling with tweens/teens, factor that into your budget!

Every lodge has different age cut-offs and pricing structures, and the differences can literally save you THOUSANDS. This is one of the biggest things I help my clients navigate, knowing which lodges are the most family-friendly on pricing can be a total game-changer!

LODGE ESSENTIALS — WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Not every “family-friendly” lodge is actually set up for families! Here’s my checklist:

MUST HAVES for under-12s:

• Family suites or interconnecting rooms
• Babysitting services available (I’ve seen these run from anywhere from $4 an hour to $15 an hour) 
• Pool
• Children’s menu and flexible meal times
• Cots, high chairs, baby monitors on request
• Age policy that fits your family

WORTH PAYING FOR:

• Junior Ranger or Kids’ Club programs
• In-room babysitting 
• Malaria-free location if you’ve got under 5s

PRIVATE VEHICLES — TRUST ME, BOOK ONE!

If you take ONE piece of advice from this entire post, it’s THIS: book a private vehicle!

Here’s why, a shared vehicle has 6 other guests on it who paid good money to see a leopard. They will NOT be thrilled when your 3-year-old needs a bathroom break 20 minutes in, or when your 6-year-old gets cranky because “the impala are boring.” 

A private vehicle = your family, your pace, your rules. Want a shorter drive? Done. Skip the morning and do a long sundowner instead? Done. Stop for an hour at a hippo pool because your kid is obsessed? Done! 

Many lodges actually REQUIRE a private vehicle for guests under 6 (some under 12). Even when they don’t, it’s worth every penny. Usually $500-900 extra per day. 

Otherwise, schedule babysitting services for around the adult game drives. You don’t want to force your under 6 year old to stick to an adult schedule. Babysitting helps so that then you don’t have to force your little one up early in the mornings, as well as you don’t have to deal with them losing it when it gets closer to sun downers and bedtime.

BABYSITTING & KIDS’ CLUBS

Most family-focused luxury lodges offer babysitting in some form:

In-Suite Babysitting — A staff member sits in your suite while your kiddo sleeps or naps, so you can head out on the morning/afternoon drive. 

Kids’ Clubs — Programmed activities (bug hunts, baking, beading, swimming) supervised by trained staff. Common at Kapama, Phinda, and the bigger andBeyond properties.

Dedicated Private Nannies — A nanny attached to your family for the ENTIRE stay. Available at top-tier lodges.

Real talk, babysitting is what makes a Safari with very young kids actually RELAXING. You can do the dawn drive when wildlife is at its best, come back to a sleeping baby, eat breakfast with your 1-year-old, swim midday, then hand them over for nap time while you head out for sundowners. The lodge’s rhythm is literally built for this!

QUICK PLANNING CHECKLIST

Before you book, ALWAYS ask:

• Minimum age policy at the lodge AND on game drives (these can be different!)
• Whether a private vehicle is required or optional
• Babysitting availability + cost
• Kid pricing structure — free age, 50% age, and when full adult rate kicks in
• Family suite configurations
• Malaria status of the reserve
• Pool safety setup

REAL TALK FROM ME

Here’s what I want you to take away from this entire post, Safari with your kids really isn’t about the cost, or the logistics, or which lodge has the best pool. It’s about creating CORE MEMORIES with the people you love most in the world.

The way your 5-year-old will wake up at 5am without ONE complaint because she heard a lion roar near the lodge in the night.

Your teenager, yes, the one normally glued to their phone, leaning forward in the safari vehicle, completely captivated by the bush.

Dinners around a fire, under more stars than they’ve ever seen.

The way kids notice things adults stopped noticing, the color of a beetle’s shell, the way the wind sounds at 5am, how a giraffe’s eyelashes work!

You’ll see Africa twice on a family Safari, once through YOUR eyes, and once through THEIRS. And that second view? That’s the one you’ll never forget.

Here’s the thing, we never know what tomorrow brings. We never know how much time we get with our parents, our partners, our kids. Kids grow up faster than we want them to. Schedules get busier. Life gets in the way. The “right time” doesn’t exist, it’s just right now, in the present.

Don’t wait until they’re “older.” Don’t wait until things “calm down.” The families who book this trip never regret it. The ones who keep waiting? They always wish they’d done it sooner.
