If you’ve ever seen a giraffe casually sticking its head through a window while someone sips their morning coffee… this is that place!

Giraffe Manor is one of the most iconic hotels in the world, and after doing a site visit as a travel agent, I can tell you it’s not just about the photos. There’s actually a really meaningful conservation story behind it, and a lot people don’t realize that.

So here’s everything you need to know before booking (and how to actually get in) – p.s. they book out 1.5-2 years in advance!

What is Giraffe Manor?

Giraffe Manor is a boutique luxury hotel located just outside Nairobi, Kenya, set on 12 acres of private land surrounded by 140 acres of protected forest.

The property itself dates back to 1932 and feels like something straight out of Out of Africa, ivy-covered walls, old-world charm, and a very intimate, private-home feel.

It’s part of The Safari Collection, which owns a handful of luxury camps and lodges across Kenya.

But what makes it famous is the resident herd of endangered Nubian (formerly Rothschild’s) giraffes that freely roam the property and quite literally join you for breakfast.

The Giraffes: What They Actually Do (and Why It Matters)

This is the part I think is the most important—and honestly, what makes staying here feel worth it.

Giraffe Manor IS NOT a zoo.

Giraffe Manor is directly tied to a long-standing conservation effort that started in the 1970s, when there were fewer than 100 Nubian/Rothschild’s giraffes left in Kenya.

The property became part of a breeding and conservation program designed to protect and repopulate the species.

Baby giraffes were raised here and then reintroduced into protected areas across Kenya, helping grow the population significantly over time. (It’s also fascinating to learn about how they transport them back to the wild!)

Today, the giraffes you see at the manor aren’t captive in the traditional sense—they move freely between the sanctuary and surrounding forest, and they come up to the house because they’ve learned it’s a safe place (and yes… snacks are involved).

Your stay also supports the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, which runs the Giraffe Centre next door and funds conservation and education programs for local communities.

So while it feels like a bucket list experience, it’s also directly contributing to something bigger.

There are only 12 rooms total, which is a huge part of why it’s so hard to book.

Rooms are split between two buildings:

The Historic Manor (the original house):

This is where you get the classic, iconic experience. Think old-world charm, traditional decor, and those famous giraffe-at-the-window moments.

The Garden Manor (newer addition):

Same aesthetic, but slightly more modern and often more spacious—great for families or groups.

Every room is completely different, which is important to know. Some rooms are much better positioned for giraffe interactions, while others are more private.

This is one of those places where your room choice really impacts your experience—which is exactly why I always help clients select the right one.

What the Experience is Like

Staying here feels more like being in a private home than a hotel.

How to Book (Important)

Giraffe Manor is one of the hardest hotels in the world to book.

Most availability is gone 12–18 months in advance, especially for peak travel seasons like July through October and over the holidays.

A few things that help:

Booking it as part of a larger Kenya safari itinerary
Being flexible with dates and room categories
Planning well in advance
