Botswana is a magical country, where there are no fences or borders and the wild animals completely roam free! We spent 3 nights rooftop camping in Botawana! It was AMAZING and I still cannot get over how the stars looked at night. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the night sky and stars properly before. Botswana is very rural, far away from any bright city lights that flood the sky, which makes star gazing something out of this world.
To start road-tripped to Chobe National Park from South Africa over 2 days. We made a pit stop overnight in Francistown, because it is very dangerous to drive at night in Botswana. Because Botswana has no fences / borders, and no highway lighting, there’s a high chance you could be driving and hit an animal. The villages you drive through have lots of cattle and goats wandering right next to the highway, and at night it is incredibly hard to see anything. We stayed at Diggers Inn, where we noticed was a popular spot for other travelers also roadtripping through Botswana.

We rented our vehicle from Budget Camper Vans online, and we picked our car up from the Britz facility in Kasane. Our rental was affiliated with Britz Campervans and I was really impressed with the rental process and the location we rented from. The guys there really went through the entire car with us and contents to make sure we were well equipped and safe on the road. Being new to the camper 4×4 world, there was so much information I didn’t know before getting an orientation to one of these vehicles. It’s important to know how to use the car properly and how to trouble shoot because in Botswana you are going to be without signal and help if your car gets a flat, gets stuck in the sand, etc.

We spent each day traveling throughout Chobe National Park. There are very limited campsites in the actual national park, so we stayed about 10 minutes from the park gates at Munchenje Campsites the campsites were gated and very clean. We had a hookup to electricity, a sink, braai and firepit. The showers and toilets were super clean. The best part of the campsite was the viewing deck where you could watch the most beautiful sunsets!
One of the most wild experiences I had while camping was hearing all the elephants trumpeting, hyenas whooping it up, and lions roaring!

Below are a few of my favorite shots I took of the wildlife while I was camping in Botswana!
